There will be plenty to do, see and buy at the first ever Applewood Harvest Market on Saturday 7 May.

Applewood Preparatory School will host the first Applewood Harvest Market on Saturday 7 May.

Expect apple bobbing, hay diving, tractor rides, mini-zipline, a dog show and hoop throwing. Book for an early start when the Tru-Cape Trail Running Challenge begins.

This 11 km run winds through fynbos and farmlands along with its mini-me trail event, a 5 km family run. Plenty of prizes will be up for grabs.

Afterwards, festival-goers can replenish themselves at the Applewood Harvest Market with food stalls from Elgin’s authentic smokehouse, The Hickory Shack, country gourmet from The Pool Room Restaurant, padkos favourites and fresh apple juice from Peregrine Farm Stall and artisanal food from Terra Madre.

Visitors can also visit the apple stall for tastings, pies, toffee apples and apples by the bag, as well as hand-crafted apple stationery. Warming soups, farm fresh bread, candy floss, kettle corn and Belgian waffles will also be for sale.

Some of Elgin’s top wine-makers and the region’s craft cider will be on hand, as will organic vegetables, honey and flowers from the Valley.

Musician Gian Groen will have festival-goers hunkering down on the hay bales as the children are entertained with a host of old-fashioned games at the little people’s festival.

The trail runs start at 08:00, while the family fun run starts at 08:30. Market-goers can arrive from 09:00, with the day winding up at 15:00.

Entry for the Tru-Cape Trail Running Challenge costs R100 for the 11 km and R50 for the 5 km; enter online via Quicket.
