Newberry House Montessori School in Somerset West has a new man at the helm. Alistair Green was recently appointed principal.
The Stellenbosch University graduate spent 12 years in the UK, where he completed his MA in Education and became assistant head teacher at Jubilee High School in Surrey.
Visiting Newberry House for the first time, he was blown away by the breathtaking setting, but equally excited by the opportunity to work in a Montessori environment.
“Although there is no perfect model, I believe Montessori provides many solutions in terms of equipping children to think independently and be leaders of their own learning,” he said.
“It is often said knowledge is power, but that’s only half the story. Applied knowledge is where the real power lies, and this is what the Montessori model really gets right.”
Green’s MA in Education from Edge Hill University (UK) focused on organisational leadership, another skill he’ll bring to Newberry House.
“Leadership is all about adding value and constantly thinking how to make things better for the people you serve, whether directly or indirectly,” Green said.
“To lead effectively and help others grow, however, you have to take responsibility for your own growth. You can only take people as far as you have grown, and when you stop growing, you stop leading effectively.”
