From 2001 until 2011, Somerset Drummies was celebrated as one of the Top 10 outfits in the country.
Sign-ups are now open for the 2019 season for girls from Grade 1 to 12.
It is a choreographic dance sport that does not require girls to be perfectly supple or fit.
Drum majorettes fit all types of body styles to improve fitness while enhancing rhythmic ability. The sport promotes elegance, grace, confidence and team work.
Through regulated practices a team improves in socialisation and fine motor skills relative to coordination, focus and memory.
It is generally agreed that girls who do drummies tend to become confident communicators, hard workers, sound academic achievers and young ladies who are poised and respectful.
Drummies host an annual regional championship followed by a national championship each year. You can read more about it on www.samca.org.za.
Darryl Spijkers is an experienced majorette coach, who won a national gold in 2017, when the Western Province team he trained took first place.
He is at the helm of these Somerset Majorettes, ably assisted by ex-drummies Kaylee Bevan and Kayla Scott.
Practice will be open to any girls whose schools do not offer drum majorettes as a sport. It will be held at the baseball club at Radloff Park. Full details will at the first meeting for all girls tomorrow (Friday 16 November) at the Playhouse Theatre in Somerset West.
