The under-18A girls’ hockey team of Parel Vallei High School bagged the bronze medal at the annual SPAR Hockey Challenge.

A total of 39 teams from Boland and Western Province vied for the spoils throughout the prestigious tournament, with PV locking horns with Curro Durbanville (won 4-1), Montagu (won 5-0), St Cyprians (drew 0-0) and De Kuilen (won 8-0) on Sunday 12 May. They ended second in their pool and advanced to final round, played at Paarl Gimnasium on Wednesday 15 May.

Here they faced Rhenish (drew 0-0), Bellville (won 4-0) and Springfield (won 1-0) to finish at the top of the pool.

In the semi-final, the girls came up against Stellenberg and played to a 1-1 stalemate. The encounter went into “showdowns” and the team eventually lost the outing.

Their third-fourth play-off with St Cyprians also went into “showdowns”, but this time the PV girls bagged the win to take the tournament’s bronze medal.
