Megan Lane (centre), a learner at Parel Vallei High School, successfully completed the Gold level of The President’s Award. She also completed the Bronze and Silver levels of the programme, which forms part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Scheme operating in more than 140 countries. It aims to empower youths aged 14 to 25 to grow personally and collectively through self-development. Participants must show regular participation and commitment in the areas of service, skill and physical recreation, and take part in an adventurous journey. Megan’s activities included 73 hours of service at Helderberg Rangers, Strand Beach, Somerset West Baptist church, AZI and Shalom Pre-primary School. This year she chose hockey as physical activity and debating as a skill. For the adventure journey, she completed seven days of hiking in the Northern Mountains in Geres-Lisbon, Portugal and a residential project with Edge of Africa in Cape Town last December. She is proudly flanked by principal David Schenck and Pam Ellis, the teacher leading the programme at PV.
