The SA Dream Hunters Social Club have banded together and tapped into their network to hand over 12 jackets to matric learners of the two high schools in Macassar – Zandvliet and Macassar High.
The club existed initially as a social club that was started among a group of friends who wanted to save up enough to fund trips to attend big sporting events like rugby or football world cups.
Griffin Solomons, chairperson of the SA Dream Hunters, believes that even though the social club solely exists to fund their trips they have a social responsibility to give back to the communities where they come from.
“The club was founded and established by a few of us who are friends and we thought this to be an effective way to raise funds for us to be able to travel to Rugby World Cups,” Solomons related. “All the money that we raised for our trip to Japan in 2019 came from fundraisers and nothing from the pockets of the members, which is why we feel that we offer so much more as a group and club than just to help each other get to travel to these amazing sporting events.”
The handover of the jackets took place at Zandvliet High School with representatives from both schools, matric learners, the SA Dream Hunters and a sponsor at the handover to give the twelve matric candidates a matric jacket.
“We identified the need at the two high schools and, because most of us attended either of these schools, it was a fitting project for us to embark on,” added deputy chairperson Darrin Roman. “Every matriculant identifies with great pride when wearing a matric jacket, and we are grateful for brands like Henties Fruit Juices who have come on board when we said we will be handing over the jackets at Zandvliet to the 12 matriculants.”
Since the handover, Solomons said they received numerous requests for similar projects from schools as far as Ceres. Club members hope to approach many other local businesses in the areas where the schools are located for similar projects.
“We want to give back to as many schools as we can, because we don’t have sponsorships for our trips to sport events, we rely heavily on fundraisers and the support from our families, so it is just right that we give back to these communities that support us so diligently,” Solomons pointed out. “DC Maroon Attorneys have been with us since we started SA Dream Hunters to help us with future community projects. I am extremely happy and grateful for the team that we have; we make a mean team.”
