After a two-season break as a result of to Covid-19 lockdown restrictions, the lawn bowlers of the Helderberg basin and Western Province could not wait for the new season to start.
Over the next few weeks local clubs will compete against one another and other clubs in WP for the top honours of their respective divisions and to try and avoid relegation. Each game holds a maximum of 12 points.
The local clubs contesting the Flag (men’s league) and the Muter (women’s league) are as follows:. Helderberg Bowls Club is the only club in the basin that have representation in the Premier Division of the men’s and women’s leagues. The club’s men’s B-side plays in Second Division, while the club only has one women’s team in the Premier Division. The Premier men’s team lost 1,5-10,5, the B-side beat Mowbray by 7,5-4,5 and Premier women’s team won 10-2 to Old Oak Bowls Club.. Somerset West Bowls Club’s men are in the First Division and beat Durbanville comfortably 11-1, while the Premier Division women’s team travelled to Western Province Cricket Club and won 5-7. The men’s B- and C-team both won their games 7-5 against Constantia and Western Province Cricket Club, respectively.. Strand Bowls Club’s men and women both compete in the two divisions of the Flag and Muter. The women lost to their Gordon’s Bay neighbours and then travelled to Edgemead.. Gordon’s Bay Bowls Club have a women’s team in the First Division and a men;s team in the Second Division. The men beat The Glen Country Club 11-1, while the women recorded a 7-5 victory over neighbours Strand in a tightly fought derby. . Stellenbosch Bowls Club have men’s teams in the Premier and Second divisions, with both sides recording good wins in the first week of play. The Premier Division team won The Glen Country Club 10-2, while the B-side won 7-5 over Belville.
