Staff of Rheinmetall Denel Munition (RDM) in Macassar rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty as they participated in the company’s annual Clean-up Day last Friday (11 February).

The initiative was also held at the two RDM sites in Gauteng and North West on Thursday 10 February. “We must take responsibility for our planet, to be more careful with its resources and to protect it,” said RDM CEO Jan-Patrick Helmsen.

“Anyone can contribute. For this reason, we implemented local initiatives on the subject of climate change and environmental protection together with our neighbours.”

To create hype and full participation among staffers, a countdown was held leading up to the clean-up days. In Macassar, areas within the RDM site and in surrounding communities were identified for the clean-up operation, creating gardens in courtyards, painting the floors of work spaces and planting trees.

A team consisting of RDM employees and 30 Macassar community residents, including Ward 109 councillor Peter Helfrich, participated in cleaning of the Macassar Civic Centre and the area in front of Macassar Shopping Centre. Rotarians of the Helderberg Sunrise Rotary Club also supported the clean-up, doing their bit for the environment by collecting litter along the stretch of beach bordering the local RDM site.

To cap off the day-long initiative, RDM sponsored a braai for all those who joined hands in the worthy cause. “We have a single mission, but we have many global challenges,” Helmsen pointed out.

“Local initiatives from the neighbourhood raise local awareness and initiate a solution for these challenges. Let’s all be part of the solution.”
