The security officer killed in a shooting in
Nomzamo on Wednesday afternoon (2 March) has been identified as Sigagayi Siviwe,
an employee of Secure Rite Security.
The tragic incident occurred just after 12:00 in
Nombula Street, near the Nomzamo Clinic. It is believed Siviwe, who was on-duty
at the time, was in the township to pick up a colleague when he was shot multiple
times. The exact circumstances which led to the murder remain unclear, but a trusted
source told DistrictMail the security officer’s service pistol was not found on
the scene.
The officer, who was in his early 30s, was declared dead when emergency services arrived on scene.
Herman Ras, manager of Secure Rite Security, said the
armed response company has been rocked by the senseless killing and Siviwe’s
colleagues are “traumatised”.
In August 2018, DistrictMail reported on the then 27-year-old
fighting for his life in hospital following a crash near a BP service station
in Somerset West (““Officer seriously injured”, 16 August 2018”). He was on-duty and responding to an incident when he
crashed his armed response vehicle into a tree in Main Road, sustaining serious
injuries.
Since DistrictMail broke the news of
the fatal shooting on its Facebook page, messages of condolences streamed in,
in tribute to the slain security officer. One read: “RIP bra. You were still so young. ‘Strongs’ to his newlywed wife.(sic)”
Another user wrote: “Wow! [This is] very sad. I can’t believe we saw him [this] morning. This is really bad.”
