The Helderberg Marine Protected Area (MPA), which is a home and breeding area for an array of over 40 species of birds, had it’s sign receive a facelift, which is scheduled for completion in the coming week. Lisa Starr of Helderberg Ocean Awareness Movement (Hoam) said that a host of sponsors got together to help with the project, which included removing the old paint and repainting it blue, and artwork will now follow as well as an educational piece for beach goers. “The MPA is vital for our future as it is a safe haven for nature to reproduce and be at ease,” she said. “This is a productive biologically diverse area. It’s role is to achieve long term conservation of nature and the ecosystem. To protect the fauna, flora, birds, spawning fish and to enhance stock abundance, and we hope this sign will help educate the community on its importance.”
