The construction of civil engineering services is underway at the City of Cape Town’s multimillion-rand housing project in Macassar, which will eventually accommodate 2 469 beneficiaries.

“I am heartened at the progress made at the site,” said Malusi Booi, Mayoral Committee member for Human Settlements, following a site visit to check on the project’s progress last Wednesday (9 March). “We thank the community and beneficiaries for their support as our projects cannot progress well without their cooperation.”

He said the current civil engineering contract for the R132 million development, which is located close to major transport routes and community facilities, is being completed in three phases.

Booi explained Phase 1 comprised the civil works for 605 erven, and was completed in April last year, with construction of the houses earmarked to start in March next year. “There has been some delay in the start of the construction of homes for the first phase of the project, owing to unforeseen challenges. But construction is now earmarked to start next March. The City thanks the community for its patience.”

Booi further divulged that civil works for Phase 2 are expected to be completed in October and the civil works for Phase 3 is earmarked for completion in June next year.

Beneficiaries of this project will be selected according to the City’s Housing Allocation Policy and Housing Needs Register, to ensure housing opportunities are made available in a fair and transparent manner that prevents queue jumping, to those who qualify for housing as per South African legislation.

“The City is continuing with related processes for the three phases,” said Booi. “It is sometimes a challenge to trace beneficiaries as their details on the database are often outdated. All potential or aspiring beneficiaries and those who might qualify for State-subsidised housing are encouraged to place their name on the City’s Housing Needs Register and, importantly, to update their information if required.”
