Although it is against the law, the illicit and extremely cruel “sport” of dogfighting has been of growing concern of Helderberg residents.
A drive through various parts of the basin will show young men walking healthy and good looking, but visibly aggressive and vicious canines on leads. These are definitely not your average house pets, but prized dogs for the dogfighting ring. Often house pets are stolen in local communities for this very purpose. Some end-up in the ring, while others are used purely as bait to get the prized fighter dogs baying for blood when their opponents enter the ring. What makes dogfighting attractive for many, is not only their bloodthirsty obsession and fascination of watching two animals tear each other apart, but the large amounts of money that are often at stake.
This week we laud authorities for their commendable investigation, which resulted in three arrests that will hopefully send out the message that such a barbaric crime will not be condoned. To community members, well done for keeping a watchful eye in the hope of curbing this bloody business.
