Strand is one of several suburbs in greater Cape Town where an increase in theft of water meters has been reported over the last eight months.

And the municipality is calling on the community’s vigilance in not only reporting stolen meters, but also offering a reward for people sharing information that may lead to the successful arrest or recovery of stolen items.

A total of 3 341 incidents were reported from 1 July last year to 30 April this year, an increase of 1 143 compared to the previous financial year’s figures over a shorter period.

Apart from Strand, other Cape Town areas that have seen an increase in theft incidences are Steenberg, Retreat, Grassy Park, Athlone, Woodstock, Ottery, Bellville South, Lentegeur, Manenberg and Belgravia.

The City of Cape Town is offering a reward of up to R5 000 to residents who report incidents or information related to the theft and vandalism of water and sanitation infrastructure, which could well lead to a successful arrest and/or recovery of stolen equipment.

“We cannot condone the theft of critical infrastructure,” said Zahid Badroodien, Mayco member for Water and Sanitation.

“We ask residents to be vigilant and report these incidents so they can be investigated we can clamp down on this reckless, inconsiderate behaviour that has a knock-on effect on residents.

“Stealing a water meter from a property causes major inconvenience for the affected household, as they have no water supply until their meter is replaced. When such incidents occur, the City makes every effort to replace these reported stolen meters in the shortest time frame. Also, the money spent on replacing the meters could have been used elsewhere.”

Brass water meters, which have a high scrap value, are no longer being installed by council. It is now installing only those of the plastic kind. “It will take some time before all brass meters are replaced with plastic ones,” Badroodien pointed out. “The cost for the City to replace a stolen or damaged 15 mm water meter is R3 260,60, while the cost for a stolen or damaged 20 mm water meter is R3 744,60.”
