The principal of Strand Secondary School has extended an invitation to all ex-Strand learners and alumni to attend a founding meeting for the establishment of a sports club that would cover the codes of rugby, netball, soccer and cricket.

“We have the facilities, space and drive to serve the community, and we want to put them to use for the benefit of the community, driven by our ex-learners,” said curator principal of Strand Secondary John Reyneke.

The meeting is scheduled to take place on Saturday 30 July at 09:00, and the invitation is open to all. “The entire community, clubs, federations, and businesses are called on to come together and collaborate on the best move forward to give opportunities to our youth and uplift the school. With the feedback at this meeting we can move forward with the process of the establishment of men’s and women’s teams in various sports codes and build structures accordingly.”

Strand Secondary School currently has their own rugby and soccer fields, cricket pitch as well as netball courts. Although neglected and not in regular use, Reyneke said already businesses and organisations had come on board to assist the school.

Strand Golf Club has offered to provide the school sports fields with free weekly maintenance, including the cutting of grass, and together with local business Somerset Sand en Klip will soon construct a driving range at the school. “The possibilities for the community are endless,” said Reyneke, and again emphasised the importance of standing together as a community to see the vision’s success.
