This is according to Ward 109 councillor Peter Helfrich who heeded the call of concerned residents fearing for safety after news of the “shocking” discovery had social media abuzz this week.
Esmarie Fourie shared an image of the suspected explosive device which she allegedly dug up on the local beach to various Facebook community groups on Monday (25 July), asking users whether they could help identify the object with unrecognisable black print on it. Fourie eventually contacted the police and the Explosives Unit was called out to assess and seize the item.
“When I initially heard about the matter, I contacted the senior management of RDM to ask them to provide me with formal feedback. I received a speedy response, stating that their experts have closely studied the photographs of the ammunition which was found on Macassar Beach and is being shared on social media. They informed me that they can, with absolute certainty, confirm that the item is not a RDM product. They stated that they do not make, nor have they ever made this particular item,” said Helfrich.
