The City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services were called to action over the weekend for two separate fires in the Helderberg.
Firefighters responded to an emergency call of a building alight on the corners of Onverwacht Street and Faure Marine Drive in Strand at 01:51 on Saturday (30 July).
“Crews from Strand, Somerset West and Sir Lowry’s Pass were dispatched and had to cut the locks on the roller shutter door to gain entry into the building,” said Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the City’s Fire and Rescue Services.
“The fire was extinguished at 03:00 and no injuries were reported.
It is suspected that the fire may have been caused deliberately and the scene was handed over to the local police for further investigation.”
Firefighters were also dispatched after a raging fire broke out at a house in Church Street at 18:42 on Sunday (31 July).
“Fire crews from Strand, Sir Lowry’s Pass and Somerset West attended to the scene where a formal building was well alight,” said Carelse. “The entire roof structure was destroyed and three persons displaced after the blaze, which was successfully extinguished at 20:57.”
