A memorial garden located within the confines of Gordon’s Bay Police Station was officially opened on Monday (8 August) and will be a space where members and security partners can sit to remember fallen colleagues, recollect and reflect, and find peace whenever they seek it.

A small ceremony was held at the opening of the garden, which is nestled in a corner of the precinct and features a police-themed painted wall, sitting bench and a cross to remember especially fallen officer Constable René Cupido who, in 2011, committed suicide.

“The garden also serves to honour her memory,” Captain Adre Delport, commander at Gordon’s Bay Police Station, said at the opening.

She addressed a small group of members, donors and invited guests who attended the ceremony. Following a word of welcome and prayer, a musical item entitled “The Prayer” was performed as a fitting beginning for the garden. “Our members can now find a space where the everyday sacrifices of our officers can be remembered,” Delport said. “May this garden be a source of positivity and goodwill for all. And should you wish to add a flower then please do.” She also expressed her heartfelt thanks to all donors, sponsors and partners who made the memorial garden come true.
