The Ikhwezi Community Day Centre’s pharmacy boasts Grade A status, an accolade attributed to the hard work of dedicated pharmacy staff at the Nomzamo health facility.

The Ikhwezi Community Day Centre (CDC) boasts a pharmacy rated Grade A, the highest possible standard obtainable from the national Pharmacy Council.

This achievement was marked by a small celebration hosted at the Nomzamo facility on Friday 30 September. The accolade is seen as the cherry on top of sustained hard work from the pharmacy staff at the centre, championed by the Responsible Pharmacist Lindy Mckenzie.

The Ikhwezi Pharmacy went from being a Grade C facility in 2021, when Mckenzie took over, to Grade A, following an unannounced inspection in July.

The main objective of the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) is to monitor the standards of good pharmacy practice (GPP) in pharmacies. This is done through unannounced inspections, which ensure the public is provided with quality and comprehensive pharmaceutical service of acceptable standards.

A pharmacy’s grading is calculated by using a weighted questionnaire, and this determines the frequency of a pharmacy inspection, with Grade A frequency of inspection every three years, Grade B every two years and Grade C every year.

Among the improvements implemented at the local pharmacy were updating standard operating procedures, ordering of relevant reference materials, motivating for the installation of an air conditioner, ensuring the pharmacy fridges were connected to a generator and fridge temperature monitors were installed, and sourcing a replacement pharmacy licence after the original was lost in the fire at the CDC in 2019.

“I want to tip my hat to this extraordinary effort from staff at our Ikhwezi Pharmacy, and especially the Responsible Pharmacist for driving the process to make this achievement a reality,” said the City’s Community Services and Health Portfolio Committee chairperson, Councillor Ronel Viljoen.

“They went above and beyond in making the changes they wanted to see in their work environment for the benefit of the surrounding communities. They are true ambassadors for the City, and I applaud every one of them for the role they played in getting that Grade A status.
