Trading at stores in Somerset Mall continues as normal following a fire at the popular shopping centre late on Wednesday evening (21 December).
The cause of the fire is not known and under investigation at this stage. No-one was injured in the blaze and centre management confirmed no stores were damaged in the incident.
Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service, confirmed they received an emergency call of the fire at a supermarket at Somerset Mall at 22:30. “The first arriving officer from Strand Fire Station confirmed it was two generators alight at the rear of the receiving bay of the shopping complex,” he said.
“In total six firefighting appliances, including a specialised vehicle, were on scene with 25 staff. By 23:45 the fire was extinguished and there was no visible damage to the building.”
Mel Jeffries, marketing manager at Somerset Mall, said the two generators belong to a supermarket at the mal. “The fire was isolated to the supermarket’s external delivery yard. There are no injuries and there is no damage to the building. Somerset Mall continues to trade as per usual.”
A statement issued by Pick n Pay read: “Two generators located outside the Pick n Pay receiving area at Somerset Mall caught alight. Firefighters on scene managed to douse the fire within an hour. The fire damage was limited to the exterior of the building. No-one was injured and no stores were damaged. The cause of the fire is being investigated.”
