Well over 250 students of Stellenbosch University, from the houses Capri, Equité, Willgenhof and Silene, descended on Strand Beach last Thursday (9 February) for a beach clean facilitated by Helderberg Ocean Awareness Movement (Hoam). They were joined by members of the Strand Neighbourhood Watch, Secure Rite Security, Law Enforcement Coastal Management and Shark Spotters, as safety is the first priority when cleaning the dunes. “As our beach is now very clean, we decided to use all those hands to make a big difference by hitting the dunes from the Helderberg Marine Protected Area to the lifesaving clubhouse,” said Hoam founder Lisa Starr. “We even took the group behind the pump station, which isn’t for the faint-hearted. Everyone got stuck in, and after an hour we had removed around 100 bags of litter, a bench, carpets, clothes, storage containers and a shopping trolley. For the third year, running these students have contacted Hoam for their give-back initiation task. It is always fun in the sun with these future footprint makers.” She thanked the City of Cape Town’s Solid Waste Department for removing all the bags with haste. PHOTO: Ashen van der Walt
