The Helderberg community is being called on to respond in their numbers to an alien-vegetation hack and a litter clean-up planned for Island Park in Voortrekker Road, adjacent to the Lourens River, which will take place this Sunday 12 March.
The initiative is being organised by the Lourens River Conservation Society (LRCS), and its chairperson Steven Louw has called on members of the public to become actively involved.
“The more we use the river banks for jogging, dog walking, cycling and strolling, the less likely they are to become criminal hotspots,” he pointed out. “We trim back undergrowth to improve visibility, remove alien vegetation and keep the river flow unblocked. We also clear the river and river banks of litter and pollution.
“We thank the many citizens who spend a few hours a month helping us, but we can always do with more hands on deck, as the City struggles to fulfil all the many service requirements in Cape Town. Take pride in where you live, make your city safer and enjoy the natural beauty we are lucky enough to enjoy.”
The clean-up has received full support from the Somerset West City Revival (SWCR) community project, which has joined the call for residents to take matters in their own hands.
“Nobody can complain about the condition of the area unless they come out, get their hands dirty and show their support,” said Michelle Engelbrecht, founder of SWCR.
“Be a participant and help us restore the natural beauty of our beautiful town.
The clean-up is scheduled to start at 08:30 and will last until 10:30, and parking will be available at Island Park in Voortrekker Road.
