Police’s swift reaction has led to the arrest of two suspects after they found with a stolen government vehicle and an illegal firearm on Sunday 5 March.

The police’s swift reaction led to the arrest of two suspects found with a stolen government car and an illegal firearm outside a Lwandle shopping centre on Sunday (5 March).

According to a media statement released by provincial police, members were alerted after a government vehicle was stolen from the Kuils River Magistrates’ Court on Sunday night by a security guard on duty, which was detected by its tracking device driving along in the Lwandle policing precinct.

“They immediately proceeded to search for the vehicle,” the statement said. “The members spotted the vehicle fitting the same description given them driving in Nomzamo with two male occupants in it. They followed them until the vehicle’s occupants parked at a shopping mall in Lwandle, where the members approached tactically and instructed the suspects to disembark from the vehicle. On searching them they found an unlicensed firearm in the passenger’s possession, and he was still wearing a full security guard uniform.”

The two suspects, aged 21 and 38, were arrested for possession of a stolen motor vehicle and an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Another charge of theft from a motor vehicle was also due to be added.

The duo was expected to appear in the Strand Magistrates’ Court once charged.
