A group of eight learners at Somerset West Primary School who have been selected as part of a school tour to Ireland to play rugby and netball in September are thrilled to have made the cut but are as yet uncertain whether the trip will materialise due to lack of funding.
Each learner requires at least R50 000 to cover flights and accommodation for the 10-day tour, but despite this they are upbeat and immensely grateful to have been offered the opportunity. Only one of the eight learners has ever been overseas, and all agree a trip abroad will expand their horizons and surely be an eye opener to a far wider world. This is what the learners had to say:
Shuneal Paulse: “It means a lot to be selected, and I would love to experience another country, especially while playing sport.”
Leighton Hendricks: “It’ll be absolutely great if it works out. I’m focused on rugby and the experience will be invaluable.”
Bernalee Hendricks: “It was unexpected when I was told I was selected, so it was such a pleasant surprise. I just hope I can raise the funds to make the trip.”
Tameryn Hendricks: “It will be the first time we represent our school in another country so we’re really looking forward to making this trip happen.”
Peter-John Jacobs: “I love rugby and I see this opportunity as a stepping stone towards bigger and better things.”
Skyeler Dandy: “Although there’s a lot of uncertainty on whether I go or not I really hope it works out and we get to experience Ireland.”
Matthew Barnard: “It’s a massive privilege and honour to have been selected. I play hockey and cricket too but I favour rugby so it feels like a reward that I was selected.”
Zaiden Bell: “It would be great to go. I’m starting fundraising efforts and hopefully can raise enough money to make the trip.”
