Charles Morkel Stadium in Strand once again played host to the Currie Cup First Division Mzansi Challenge on Saturday (29 April), when the San Clemente Rhinos clinched a 31–25 victory over the Zimbabwe Goshawks.

The Rhinos team, who are playing their home games in Strand, operates as part of USA Rugby’s development programme and is based in Hermanus during the Mzansi Challenge.

The Mzansi Challenge Currie Cup First Division features several South African teams and those from Mexico, USA, Canada, Zambia, Ireland, Netherlands and New Zealand.

The San Clemente Rhinos were said to also have a strong Mexican flavour and so far have had a good run.

On Saturday 8 April, the Rhinos faced SWD Eagles in their opening fixture played at Outeniqua Park in George, where they just fell short by 28-26.

Their next fixture was the following Saturday (15 April), when the Rhinos hosted the Kenya Simbas, also at Charles Morkel Stadium, and clinched a convincing 33–22 win.

The weekend after that, on 22 April, the Rhinos team travelled to Windhoek in Namibia, to face Windhoek Draught Welwitschias and snatched victory with a final score of just 25-24.

With three victories after four rounds the San Clemente Rhinos have had a good start to the competition and were aiming to keep the momentum going.

Their next fixture will be this Saturday (6 May) when they take on the Boland Kavaliers at a venue yet to be confirmed.
