The folks of Somerset Lifestyle and Retirement Village moved and grooved to the orchestral sounds of the 21-piece Mowday Band, which treated audiences to a concert in aid of the South African Guide-Dogs Association for the Blind at the Lord Somerset Clubhouse on Saturday (15 July). The association, which provides services to people who have visual, physical or developmental needs through training guide dogs, service dogs and autism support dogs, or orientation and mobility, celebrates its 70th anniversary this year. The band, which has been hosted by the Somerset West retirement village for the fourth year, is led by Richard Mowday who shifted from his gig of conductor to saxophonist to treat audiences to a magnificent solo.

Warren Ventor channelled the likes of Frank Sinatra and Ray Charles among others, entertaining guests with his versions of “I’ve got you under my skin” and “Hardhearted Hannah”.

Band members Jorgen Bjelkerud and Shannon Mowday who joined from Norway to be part of the concert for a cause.

Robin Mowday Jr braved the dance floor, taking his beloved grandmother Bernice Mowday for a spin.

The band got the audience out of their seats and moving to the beat with their groovy performances, which just kept on coming.
