A 34-year-old suspected drug trafficker was arrested after authorities swooped on a truck which was loaded with drugs worth an estimated R2.7 million in Strand on Sunday 12 November. According to Strand police, members responded to the scene where a truck was flagged down on the N2 highway opposite a gym around 06:35 on Sunday. A statement by the Hawks divulged that the suspect was nabbed following a multidisciplinary operation led by the Hawks’ South African Narcotics Enforcement Bureau team, which is based in Bellville, together with the Western Cape Crime Intelligence’s Counter Narcotics and Gangs. “The team acted on information of a suspect who was travelling from the Eastern Cape to Cape Town with a truck loaded with mandrax tablets. The Hawks’ team spotted the vehicle matching the description and it was stopped and searched,” the statement read. Altogether 61 000 mandrax tablets were found hidden in a false compartment inside the truck. The suspect was immediately arrested and the drugs seized for further investigation. The suspect appeared in the Strand Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 14 November on a charge of dealing in drugs.
