The 190th heritage anniversary of Church Street Methodist church in Somerset West is an occasion of great significance, marking a milestone in the rich and storied history of the venerable institution.
Established in 1834 by the pioneering missionary Barnabas Shaw, the church was founded as a sanctuary for freed slaves seeking spiritual guidance and solace. From its humble beginnings Church Street Methodist church has stood as a beacon of hope, resilience and social justice, playing a pivotal role in the community for nearly two centuries.
One of the enduring legacies of the church is the establishment of the Wesleyan Methodist School, later known as the esteemed Somerset West Methodist Primary School. This institution has played a pivotal role in the lives of countless individuals, transcending social and cultural boundaries to nurture generations of students with a unique ethos of resilience, compassion and unity. The impact of the school extends far beyond traditional academics, fostering a sense of pride, belonging and personal development among its alumni, many of whom have gone on to achieve remarkable success in various fields.
The church has not only been a spiritual anchor, but a catalyst for positive change in the community. The Church Street Methodist community witnessed and confronted the stark realities of apartheid, including the implementation of the Group Areas Act. Under this pernicious legislation many non-white residents were forcibly removed from certain areas, including Somerset West, tearing families apart and disrupting communities. In the face of such adversity the Methodist Church actively resisted and challenged this injustice, with efforts led by the impassioned advocacy of such leaders as Rev Joe Fourie and other dedicated individuals.
The Church’s unwavering commitment to social justice and community empowerment culminated in a momentous victory as it successfully retained its properties and surrounding homesteads, defying the much-maligned Act’s draconian measures. Such acts of resilience and defiance serve as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Church Street Methodist community and its enduring impact on the lives of those affected by the injustices of the past.
The Church Street Methodist church will officially launch its 190th anniversary celebrations on Sunday (28 January) with a special service in honour of its rich legacy and enduring impact. Following the service church members and the broader community will have an opportunity for social interaction, enjoying refreshments and obtaining special souvenirs to commemorate this historic milestone.
Throughout the year a series of monthly events are planned to commemorate the milestone, with particular highlights scheduled for October. These events will serve as a tribute to the church’s remarkable journey and its indelible imprint on the community of Somerset West. From commemorative gatherings to educational workshops and cultural exhibitions the celebrations will offer a diverse array of opportunities for individuals to come together, reflect on the church’s enduring legacy and honour its profound impact on the community over nearly two centuries.
