Local firefighters were called into action for two respective serious incidents on Thursday (8 February) which, fortunately, were without injury. Firefighting crews were dispatched after being alerted to solar panels alight on the roof of the Standard Bank building at Somerset Mall. Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services, said the incident was reported as a building fire near the bank around 12:50. “Crews from Somerset West and Strand were dispatched with a hydraulic platform to enable firefighters to gain access to the roof,” he said. “A solar panel had caught alight and was arcing. All the solar panels were isolated just before 15:00. No injuries were reported.” While firefighters were attending to the incident at the bank branch another team was dispatched to an accident scene a stone’s throw away. Carelse confirmed firefighters from Sir Lowry’s Pass were dispatched to the R44, near the mall where the fender bender occurred at an intersection. “Two motor vehicles had collided. No-one was injured. The area was declared safe around 14:20.”Photos: Jamey Gordon
