Helderberg Cricket Club will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year and is eager to celebrate the milestone, among others, with the ever-supportive community.
As the cricket season 2022-’23 draws to a close, a special commemorative event aimed at honouring a remarkable trio that has played an instrumental role in establishing the club will be held as part of the birthday celebrations.
The Smith brothers, Lionel, Edwin and Vincent, played an imperative role on and off the field. These musketeers were not only shining Helderberg stars and talented cricketers excelling with bat and ball, but they also assisted in the administration of the club.
Lionel was the first chairman of the club and was succeeded by Vincent a few years later. Both were renowned fast bowlers and top batsmen who proudly represented the local club.
Edwin, on the other hand, had rivals from opposing teams in awe of his stellar spin bowling, which aided the local outfit. Despite his disability he could produce balls that were often “unplayable”.
In honour of the legendary Smith brothers, Helderberg Cricket Club has invited four teams to participate in the event on Saturday 16 March. Cricket players, supporters and enthusiasts are warmly welcome to tap into their love of the game and join in on the commemorative fun!
The event will be held at the Helderzicht Sports Grounds, starting at 08:30. Entry is free of charge. There will be a tuck shop and cash bar, and entertainment (jumping castles and face-painting among others) for the little ones tagging along.
