Vergelegen Wine Estate in Somerset West proudly donated R5 000 to DKMS Africa, an organisation that provides blood cancer patients with a second chance at life.

The historic and picturesque estate attracts visitors from far and wide every year, not only for its exceptional wines and hospitality, but also for its fields of breathtaking sunflowers that bloom annually near the popular Stables family restaurant.

Vergelegen has developed a bond with DKMS Africa, the organisation that is a merger between the German NPO DKMS and the former South African NPO, The Sunflower Fund. Sunflowers have become associated with people and organisations that support blood cancer patients.

Vergelegen marketing manager Caroline van Schalkwyk said the contribution is the second donation to DKMS Africa, and is part of the estate’s commitment to making a positive impact on the community.

“Our annual sunflower planting represents hope and renewal, which aligns perfectly with the DKMS Africa mission to fight blood cancer and support those affected by it,” she added.

DKMS Africa head of community engagement and communications Palesa Mokomele expressed their immense gratitude for the support from Vergelegen estate.

“Such contributions are vital in helping us continue our work and to bring hope to those battling blood cancer and blood disorders,” stated senior fundraising manager Tlatsetso Palime.

According to Van Schalkwyk the sunflowers at Vergelegen are now past their prime, but the estate plans to maintain its close ties with the organisation.
