WEDNESDAY 7 AUGUST
Somerset West: Dr Rayne Stroebel challenges the typical narrative of aging as an inevitable decline in his address, “Optimal ageing – with intent; A focus on well-being” at the monthly gathering of the U3A Helderberg at Somerset West United church at 10:00. The gerontologist advocates for a shift towards well-being and neuroplasticity, emphasising that these can lead to positive outcomes for the elderly, especially against neuro-cognitive impairments such as dementia. His career was shaped by early experiences in a care home in Heidelberg, leading to the founding of Geratec in 1996 and introducing the Eden Alternative in South Africa in 2010. His consultancy, Mind Matters, supports those with dementia, promoting a community ethos based on ubuntu, the belief in interconnectedness. Stroebel is a seasoned educator, having trained more than 3 000 caregivers and spoken at numerous international conferences. The event is free for members, with a R20 entry fee for visitors.
