Parentline SA, initiated by the South African Parenting Programme Implementers Network (Sappin) last month (June), is a WhatsApp-based support service designed to provide parents with immediate access to expert parenting advice.
By saving the Parentline SA number and sending a “hi” message parents can interact with a chatbot that offers guidance on various parenting topics and scenarios. The service is designed to be data-efficient and accessible on both smartphones and feature-rich phones.
Since its inception, Parentline SA has attracted a diverse user base, primarily comprising mothers, fathers, and caregivers of children aged from newborns to 6 years. The chatbot covers essential parenting topics such as positive parenting-skills training, sleep guidelines, activity suggestions and managing challenging behaviours. The service has received positive feedback for its role in empowering parents and promoting positive parenting practices.
Looking forward, Sappin aims to expand the service to include more resources for parents of children aged 0 to 6 and to develop content for older children. Efforts are also underway to engage more fathers and caregivers. Parentline SA plans to enhance user experience by allowing parents to rate content, which will help improve topics based on user feedback.
Parents and caregivers are encouraged to use Parentline SA for both quick advice and in-depth support, contributing to a growing community of users across South Africa. Sappin, a network of NGOs, supports this initiative with evidence-based research and a commitment to fostering safe and nurturing home environments for children.
