In a gripping Super League A contest played on Saturday 3 August, GetMetal St George’s Rugby Club nearly toppled the undefeated Hamiltons RFC.
The final score, 20-11 in favour of Hamiltons, belies the intense struggle on the field and the near-upset orchestrated by the underdogs.
From the outset the Lulu Boys dominated the first half, showcasing their tenacity and skill despite the heavy, rain-soaked conditions. Curtley Hendrikse’s try put St George’s ahead, leading 5-0 at half-time. Their forward pack was relentless, particularly the loose trio, with Ashwin Shields standing out for his exceptional performance.
Hamiltons, faced with an unexpected challenge, found themselves trailing for the first time this season. The second half saw St George’s adding six more points through the reliable boot of Patrick van Wyk, converting two penalties (11-0).
Yet, numerous scoring opportunities slipped through the Lulu Boys’ fingers, preventing them from further capitalising on their lead.
Despite being under constant pressure, Hamiltons managed to claw their way back, scoring four tries in the second half. Their resilience and strategic play ultimately secured their hard-fought victory, maintaining their unbeaten record.
The Lulu Boys may have fallen short on the scoreboard, but their performance was nothing short of heroic. They dominated in all facets of the encounter, proving they are a force to be reckoned with in the league.
It wasn’t to be a day of victory for Helderberg Rugby Club either in their showdown against Ikeys.
Without many first team players, Berge relied only on the outstanding play of scrumhalf Michael Visser and full-back Stewart Jacobs, which was not enough as they lost 43-34 after trailing 19-17 at half-time.
For Berge, Jacobs scored two stunning tries, while Kyle Bender and Luke Hertz scored one each.
Visser contributed 12 points with the boot, while substitute flyhalf Darren Hendricks added one conversion.
