The Gordon’s Bay Bowling Club is gearing up for a day of charity and friendly competition this Sunday (17 November), when 72 bowlers will take to the green to raise funds for three local organizations: the Helderberg Animal Welfare Society (AWS), the Helderberg Ocean Awareness Movement (HOAM), and Wings of Hope.
The event will kick off at 09:30 with a full day of bowling. Before the games begin, Lisa Starr, founder of HOAM, will address the crowd about the organisation’s mission to protect the local environment. HOAM’s efforts are not only limited to clean-up operations but also include educational programmes for kids and adults. All funds raised will go towards educational beach clean-ups, educational school visits, more artwork murals, upliftment of the Soet River, nature preservation and fighting against oil and gas applications to prevent exploration and exploitation of our beautiful ocean and everything which resides within it.
Later, Michelle Deborah Prinsloo, founder of Wings of Hope, will share her experiences providing essential services to the community. She has been actively serving the community for over 30 years. She started a non-profit organisation, Wings of HOPE, which serves the community of Broadlands Village and neighbouring suburbs. She provides these communities through a soup kitchen where she feeds approximately 100 children and adults a week, and also distributes food parcels, clothing and household items to families in need.
Julia Evans from the Helderberg Animal Welfare Society will also be on hand to discuss the plight of local animals and encourage attendees to consider adoption. She will meet the bowlers after the second game at about 16:00 to share her journey with the animals who cannot speak for themselves.
“All of these charities are so important and if we can help where we can then what a great result after some fun on the bowling green. We would like to invite the community to visit us on the day,” stated organisers of the charity competition.
“Gordon’s Bay Bowling Club is more than just a place to play a game; it’s a community hub. The club welcomes players of all ages and abilities, from young juniors to seasoned seniors.
“Lawn bowling is a sport for everyone,” says a club spokesperson. “It’s not just about the physical game; it’s also about strategy, mental focus, and social interaction. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a complete beginner, there’s a place for you at our club.”
