Three people died and five were displaced when a fire gutted two informal structures in Pholile Park, Lwandle, in the early hours of Monday 25 May.

Three people lost their lives when a devastating fire broke out in Lwandle in the early hours of Monday (25 May).

According to spokesperson Jermaine Carelse, the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to reports of structures alight off Masakhane Road in Pholile Park around 05:00.

Firefighting crews from Strand and Sir Lowry’s Pass stations were swiftly dispatched to the scene and managed to extinguish the blaze by 06:25.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered the bodies of three individuals inside the burnt structures. All three had sustained fatal burn wounds.

The gender and age of the victims are unknown at this stage, pending further investigation.

Two informal structures were completely destroyed in the blaze, leaving five people displaced as a result.

Lwandle police will conduct an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
