A landmark on the scenic Winery Road between Somerset West and Stellenbosch is facing a challenging recovery after a devastating blaze broke out at Vredenburg Manor House in the early hours of Sunday (26 April).
The fire caused significant damage to the property’s newly refurbished wedding venue, though management confirmed that the estate’s primary accommodation facilities remain untouched and fully operational.
The blaze, which began before dawn, quickly engulfed the wedding venue that had recently undergone extensive upgrades for the region’s busy events season. Despite the structural damage, no lives were lost.
“We regret to share that our newly refurbished wedding venue was affected by a fire early this morning,” the estate said in a statement. “It is with great relief, however, that no-one was injured. Thank you, God!”
The fire response was complicated by a temporary Theewaterskloof water supply shutdown for essential maintenance. Despite this challenge, the Stellenbosch Fire Department successfully brought the situation under control.

While the loss of the event space is a significant blow, Vredenburg’s Manor House guesthouse and self-catering units were successfully shielded from the fire. Management emphasied they remain open for business and ready to welcome guests.
DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette reached out to Stellenbosch Municipality for comment on the Fire Department’s response and challenges posed by the water maintenance shutdown, but no response was received at the time of going to print.
The incident follows another major blaze that destroyed Stables restaurant at Vergelegen in March. Firehorse, a temporary restaurant, was opened on Friday 17 April, retaining all 73 staff members while restoration work takes place over seven months. The 130-seat venue will operate until October.
