Private security cameras, vehicle-tracking technology and police cooperation combined to deliver a swift arrest in a murder case in Somerset West last Wednesday (11 March).
The incident unfolded around 07:00 near a fuel station on the corner of the N2 and Reunion Drive, where a 25-year-old Zimbabwean national was fatally stabbed in an altercation with another man.
Warrant Officer Suzan Jantjies, spokesperson for Somerset West police, confirmed a 40-year-old man was arrested in connection with the stabbing. Police are investigating a case of murder.
The case took a decisive turn when the control room at Fair Cape Solutions CCTV Technologies, monitoring the area through cameras at a nearby country estate, captured the incident on surveillance.
Marius Bezuidenhout, security manager for the surveillance company, said a shift manager witnessed the scuffle and immediately alerted him. “On reviewing the footage I could see a stabbing had occurred.”
The footage showed the suspect collecting labourers at the intersection in a Nissan bakkie. Crucially, Bezuidenhout was able to identify the vehicle’s registration number. This was immediately passed on to the Somerset West branch of private security Vetus Schola for vehicle tracking.

Chris Visagie, marketing manager, said the company deployed a senior response team to the scene and joined forces with Somerset West police.
A bystander gave police a description of the suspect, but the vehicle’s licence plate remained unclear. “Using our advanced technology our team was able to retrieve the plate number,” said Visagie.
The combined team then went to the suspect’s residence, where he was arrested.
“Within three hours the man was arrested and in police custody,” Bezuidenhout said, crediting the swift collaboration among all agencies.
Visagie said the success demonstrates why Vetus Schola maintained close partnerships with police, Fair Cape Solutions CCTV Technologies and neighbourhood watches. “These alliances enable rapid sharing of information and coordinated efforts to arrest suspects quickly.”
The 40-year-old was due to appear in the Somerset West Magistrates’ Court on Friday 13 March.
