Eleven people now face charges in the Gordon’s Bay Mall triple murder case.
Tyron October and Byron Dryer were originally charged with the murders, with Grant Schroeder later added as a third suspect. When all three appeared in the Strand Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 5 March for expected bail applications, prosecutors dropped all charges against October and added eight new suspects to the case.
A total of 11 people, including Dryer and Schroeder, now face charges for the fatal shootings of Keagan Potgieter, Yusuf Morris and Lee-Roy van Rooyen.
The murders took place at Gordon’s Bay Mall on Tuesday 27 January when gunmen allegedly entered the parking area in a vehicle and opened fire on three men seated in a Toyota Corolla around 20:20. Two of the men were killed inside the car while a third died outside the vehicle.
Authorities believe the attack was linked to gang activity, with the deceased reportedly connected to a prominent Cape Flats gang.
Following the shooting, police launched an investigation that led to four individuals being taken in for questioning. They were subsequently released after 48 hours.
It is unclear whether any of the current 11 accused were among those initially questioned or what their gang affiliations might be.
The case was postponed to allow all accused to acquire legal representation. Their next scheduled appearance is on Monday 23 March, when they are expected to make formal bail applications.
