Detective-Sergeant Wynand Carelse was lauded for his hard work in the investigation of the murder of a 29-year-old man from Lwandle.

Station management of Lwandle police have lauded the investigation work of a local detective, following the successful conviction and sentencing of a 22-year-old from Lwandle in the Somerset West Regional Court last month.

Sandiso Bhushu was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment on Wednesday 28 January for the murder of a 29-year-old man in Lwandle in May last year. According to Sergeant Mthokozisi Gama, Lwandle police spokesperson, the incident occurred in Ntanga Street at 21:30 on Sunday 5 May 2024, when the deceased was embroiled in an argument with Bhushu and his 21-year-old co-accused.

As the argument escalated, the deceased walked away, but Bhushu and his co-accused followed and stabbed him from behind, Gama said. He was transported to a nearby medical facility, where he died upon arrival.

Lwandle police opened an inquest docket and, through the investigative work by Detective-Sergeant Wynand Carelse, arrested both Bhushu and the 21-year-old on murder charges. The pair appeared in the Strand Magistrates’ Court before their case was transferred to the Somerset West Regional Court.

Bhushu was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment, of which five years are suspended for five years on condition that he is not convicted of murder or attempted murder during the suspension period.

He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

The 21-year-old co-accused will continue attending court proceedings in the regional court on the same charges.

Lieutenant-Colonel Mlamli Voyiya, commander for Lwandle police, commended Carelse for his outstanding investigative work, as he left no stone unturned in bringing the perpetrator to book.
