It was a weekend of contrasting fortunes for Helderberg Cricket Club (HCC) in First Division C as they showcased a masterclass in bowling dominance against Hanover Park CC on Saturday (31 January), before falling just short in a gritty encounter with Wynberg CC on Sunday (1 February).

In their clash against Hanover Park CC, HCC proved why their bowling attack is a force to be reckoned with; despite Hanover Park winning the toss and electing to bat, they quickly found themselves in a stranglehold.

Chad Bailey was the protagonist of the first innings, returning clinical figures of 4/24 in his 10 overs. He was ably supported by Gregan Mouers (3/27), while Bailey Kapfumo provided the finishing touch, taking two wickets for just three runs in a brief but lethal spell. Hanover Park was bundled out for a mere 89 runs.

The HCC chase was clinical. Blaze Roos anchored the innings with a solid 30 off 37 balls and Junaid Sylvester’s aggressive 22* off 19 balls ensured there were no late-game jitters. Helderberg reached the target in just 16.2 overs, securing a commanding seven-wicket victory.

The momentum seemed to stay with Helderberg early in their second fixture against Wynberg CC. After winning the toss and electing to field, the Helderberg bowlers once again went to work.

Sylvester delivered a performance for the ages, tearing through the Wynberg batting lineup to claim 5/31 in his 10 overs. Despite his brilliance and supporting wickets from Enver van Boom, Wynberg managed to scrape together a competitive 196 runs.

But the chase proved a bridge too far for HCC. While Chalynn Hess (38) and the ever-present Sylvester (31) gave Helderberg a fighting chance, they struggled to maintain the required run rate against a disciplined Wynberg attack. Roos showed grit with 29 runs off 83 balls, but the team was eventually bowled out for 172, handing Wynberg a 24-run win.

In First Division A, Hottentots Holland CC (HHCC) extended their winning streak to four games after a dominant weekend. On Saturday, they stunned log-leaders Cravenby CC with a three-wicket victory.

Marwaan Wanza set the stage with a clinical 5/35 to bowl Cravenby out for 200 runs, before Abdul Aziz Temoor (62*) and Naeem Rhoda (56) steered a successful chase from a precarious 52/5.

The momentum continued on Sunday against St Augustine CC. Chasing a competitive 240 target, Rashaad Salie hammered a memorable 126 off 121 balls to guide HHCC home. Shameel Abels (2/53) and Yaasien Railoun provided vital contributions with the ball to secure the win.

In First Division B Somerset West CC (SWCC) endured a difficult weekend, suffering back-to-back defeats. On Saturday, the side was bowled out for 128 runs by Avendale CC, despite Jason Lee Josephs’ 31 runs. Avendale reached the target in the 33rd over to claim a six-wicket win.

Sunday saw a formidable Yorkshire CC post 237/7. While Scott Innes anchored SWCC’s reply with a superb innings of 56 runs and Wilhelm Esterhuizen added 21* to the tally, the team was dismissed for 156, falling 81 runs short of the target.

In First Division D, Strand CC (SCC) experienced a weekend of two halves. Saturday ended in a disappointing five-wicket loss to Northpine CC after they were restricted to a modest 116 runs. Johan Cyster (21) and Lesley Taylor (17) were the only batters to show significant resistance.

SCC looked rejuvenated on Sunday against Pollsmoor CC. Skipper Ebrahiem Latief led from the front with a brilliant 67 runs, supported by Winston Isaacs (42), to set a target of 208 runs. Cyster then shone with the ball, taking 3/33 to secure a 59-run victory and a vital bonus-point win.
