Gordon’s Bay Beach is set to transform into a high-energy arena on Sunday 15 March, as the inaugural SprintSplash challenge brings the growing sport of “swimrun” to the local community.

Organised by adventure group Nyati-x, the event promises a unique athletic experience where rules are superseded by versatility and fun.
Participants are encouraged to embrace the core spirit of the sport by swimming in their running shoes and running in their wetsuits, though those preferring a more traditional approach can opt for “skins”.
The challenge is centred on a thrilling 3 km lap course designed to test speed and adaptability.
Each loop begins with a substantial 1 600 m run along the beach, followed by a 600 m open-water swim. Athletes then transition back to the sand for a 250 m sprint, return to the water for a 450 m swim and, finally, conclude with a 100 m dash to the finish or lap start.
This alternating format ensures the heart rate remains high and the transition skills of every participant are tested.
To ensure the event remains accessible to all fitness levels three distinct distances are available. Beginners can opt for the single 3 km loop, while more seasoned athletes can tackle the 6 km challenge or the gruelling 9 km endurance race.
Entry fees are R150 for the sprint up and R610 for the full 9 km course. There is a strict limit of 100 participants to maintain the quality of the race experience, and with only 12 days left to book spots are expected to fill quickly.
The race will start at 08:30 on the Main Beach, specifically positioned in the vibrant hub in front of the Tallas restaurant and the local Spur. The location offers excellent amenities for athletes and spectators, including ample parking, public toilets and a variety of nearby food and drink options for post-race celebrations. A 13% discount awaits early bookings.
While the March event is the immediate focus, it marks just the beginning of a seasonal series. Nyati-x has already confirmed follow-up races in Gordon’s Bay on 19 April and in Simon’s Town on 17 May.
Whether competing solo or as part of a team, the event is less about elite times, more about the “true spirit of SwimRun”, splashing through the sea and feeling the sand beneath your feet.
