Cape Town launched its Festive Season Safety Plan in Muizenberg last Tuesday (18 November) deploying a record 4 700 uniformed officers, including 700 new recruits.
The enhanced operation will see 1 000 LEAP officers stationed in hotspot areas supporting local police, while additional deployments will cover beaches, roads and tourism attractions like Table Mountain. Forty-strong N2 Safety Unit and around-the-clock highway patrol operations are expected to bolster road enforcement.
Beach-safety measures include 340 lifeguards at 29 coastal sites and 343 pool lifeguards, who operate daily from 10:00 to 18:00.
The City of Cape Town’s Identikidz child-safety programme returns to busy beaches after successfully tagging more than 120 000 children last summer to help reunite them with parents or caregivers.
“Cape Town is ready to welcome visitors and locals to our beautiful city this festive season,” said mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis during the Muizenberg Beach launch.
“A record safety deployment will be in place, powered by our City’s investment in 700 new officers.”
Metro Police officers will maintain zero-tolerance for public alcohol consumption, conducting roadblocks, vehicle checks and beach patrols supported by CCTV, drones, and automatic number plate recognition technology.
The operation includes partnerships with Lifesaving Cape Town and the NSRI, who operate emergency rescue services from eight base stations citywide.
