This month, women’s extraordinary resilience and ability to rise, rebuild and inspire others through life’s greatest challenges are celebrated.
Somerset West resident Natalie Gunther’s story embodies this spirit; a testament to transforming struggle into strength and empowerment.
On the early morning of 9 August 2014 tragedy struck when the then 29-year-old was a passenger in a vehicle that lost control and rolled off the highway.
A life-changing moment
She was found 13 m away from the wreckage with a broken neck, her life hanging in the balance. In the ICU the specialist surgeon delivered devastating news to her family: there was only a 40% chance of survival, and if she survived a 50% chance of paralysis.
The proposed surgery was a new method he had performed only once before in South Africa, and just the third time ever.
“I don’t remember the accident or waking up in ICU,” Gunther recalled. “When the doctor gave us the news the thought of being paralysed had never crossed my mind; it was more about potential death. While waiting in the theatre before the operation I said a prayer, ‘Jesus, if this is the end for me, it’s okay.’ I had complete peace.”
She lived to tell of the miracle and wasn’t paralysed, but everything changed.
The doctor attributed her peaceful state to a successful surgery, but for Gunther it marked the beginning of an extraordinary transformation.
Turning pain into purpose
Before the accident she worked in sales for digital marketing and signage, but harboured dreams of learning graphic design, website development and starting her own business. As many do, she made excuses to delay her aspirations.
“Lying in hospital and realising a sales position on the road wasn’t an option, I decided now was the perfect time to start.”
From her hospital bed Gunther began building her future. She had someone design her logo and, on discharge, her learning and business adventure began – “the most painful yet rewarding time of my life, one small milestone at a time.”
During a particularly dark period of depression Gunther found unexpected encouragement. Watching a Christian channel she heard pastors deliver what felt like a personal message to “a lady aged 29, who was in a car accident, in pain and feeling down.” The message: “Use your creativity for God.” That moment sparked renewed hope.
Gunther experienced another miracle; when she prayed for her back pain to disappear in a general prayer. “I felt a warmth in my back and the pain disappeared.”
Her business went from strength to strength, parallelling her healing journey. Despite living with daily spasms Gunther accomplished more in the years following the accident than she did before it.
Over the past decade she has won and been nominated for various personal and business awards. Her journey includes marriage, divorce, a move to beautiful Mossel Bay, where she helped manage a German couple’s farm while running her business remotely, and eventually opening a branch in Mossel Bay.
Early last year, recognising she had taken on more than she could handle, Gunther made the difficult decision to close the business and resign from the farm. But this wasn’t an ending; it was another beginning.
Last month (July) she relocated to Somerset West, where she now focuses on what she believes is her true calling: teaching others about digital marketing and sharing miracle testimonies.
“I know the challenges I went through moulded me into the person I needed to be, for a time such as this. I can safely say it’s a miracle I’m alive and God has done amazing things in my life.”
Message of hope
Gunther’s story exemplifies the transformative power that Women’s Month celebrates; the ability of women to turn their greatest tragedies into their most powerful testimonies. Her journey from a broken neck to a thriving business, from despair to divine purpose, demonstrates that sometimes the devastating moments become the catalysts for our greatest breakthroughs.
“My relationship with Jesus is stronger now than it has ever been, and at the end of the day that is all that matters.”
As Gunther prepares to launch her YouTube channel and podcasts, her mission remains clear: to inspire and encourage others while providing practical tools for overcoming life’s challenges.
She is a living manifestation of the idea of women possessing the capacity to transform pain into purpose, tragedy into triumph and brokenness into breakthrough, inspiring others to believe their own miraculous comebacks are possible.
