Strand Rotary Club recently celebrated the induction of Elenore Baiocchi as its new president for the upcoming year.

Returning for a third term in this role, she expressed her gratitude to the club for their confidence and pledged to lead with energy, heart and purpose.

Reflecting on the club’ s journey, Baiocchi acknowledged the challenges faced, but emphasised that the enduring spirit of care and support among members remained the club’s greatest strength.

“Strand Rotary is truly an extended family, a place where we look out for one another, celebrate successes and lend a hand or a kind word when needed.”

She paid tribute to past leaders for their work: outgoing president Alfonzo Noble was commended for his steady leadership, and former president Lanese was recognised for restoring vital club foundations, particularly by getting the finances in order. Special thanks were extended to treasurer Deidre Petersen for her dedication in managing club finances, despite the role not being a natural fit.

The club also celebrated its valued delivery partners. The Gordon’s Bay Yacht Club, where Rotarians regularly met, was thanked for their ongoing collaboration. Baiocchi highlighted the incredible work of Crackling Needles, the local knitting and crochet group that has created thousands of handmade items over the past three years, including a giant giraffe destined to brighten local old-age homes and children’s spaces (“Knitted giraffe needs a name”, DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette, 18 June).

Excitingly, a new group of knitters meeting at the local library has expressed interest in joining Rotary efforts, marking an expanding partnership with neighbouring Rotary clubs. Other important partners represented at the induction event included ACVV, Badisa and PATCH Helderberg, whose ongoing support has been vital to the club’s community impact.

Guests from neighbouring clubs were welcomed, Baiocchi noting the significant presence of women leaders within the basin โ€“ four club presidents, a woman assistant governor, and a woman district governor โ€“ reflecting a strong commitment to diverse leadership and collaboration across the district.

The long-standing support of Stellenbosch Rotary Club, Strand’s founding neighbour club, was also acknowledged.

Baiocchi expressed appreciation to Ann Wright for including her in the Public Image Committee.

Looking ahead, she emphasised the importance of continuity through succession planning and announced plans to consolidate and support existing projects with a long-term focus.

Drawing inspiration from other clubs, she aims to guide Strand Rotary in developing a three-year strategic plan to build focus and commitment. “Rotary is not just about service; it’s meant to be fun.”

Baiocchi invoked the spirit of fellowship and joy that keeps members engaged.

The club’s leadership team for the year also includes Alfonzo Noble (past president), Cal Link (treasurer), Deidre Petersen (bookkeeping support) and Mikal Roman (Public Image representative), with secretarial duties shared and the committee set to grow as needed.

Baiocchi stressed the importance of club health, member engagement and effective onboarding for new members, ensuring everyone’s skills and talents were valued.

Closing her remarks, she said: “Together, I’m confident this year will be one of thoughtful growth, joyful fellowship and impactful service. I look forward to journeying forward with all of you.”
