An angler was likely swept off the rocks while angling and has gone missing along the Gordon’s Bay shoreline.
According to a statement released by the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), Gordon’s Bay Station 9 duty crew and the City of Cape Town water-rescue network members were called into action following reports of a 43-year-old angler going missing between Rocky Bay and the Steenbras River mouth at 10:29 on Saturday (5 July).
“The NSRI Gordon’s Bay duty crew responded to the NSRI Gordon’s Bay station-9 rescue base, where the rescue craft, Spirit of Surfski, was launched.
An NSRI rescue vehicle and rescue swimmers as well as police, provincial Emergency Medical Services (EMS), an EMS rescue squad, ER24 ambulance services and the City’s Traffic Services responded.
“The EMS/AMS Skymed rescue helicopter was also activated by Metro EMS control and police Water Policing and Diving Services (WPDS) were alerted.”
According to NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon an extensive air, sea and shoreline search, in rough sea conditions, revealed no sign of the missing man from Blue Downs.
He said police divers, assisted by NSRI Gordon’s Bay, are continuing the search, while local police launched an investigation. Lambinon extended the NSRI’s condolences, saying its thoughts, care and compassion were with the family and friends of the missing man.
