Community champions gathered in the Strand Council Chambers to receive Civic Awards from Subcouncil 8 on 22 May. These local heroes stepped up during Cape Town’s devastating storms, providing crucial relief that saved lives and rebuilt communities.

The City of Cape Town’s Subcouncil 8 recognised several individuals and organisations at the Civic Awards on Thursday 22 May.

The ceremony, held in the Strand Council Chambers, brought community leaders, civic partners and residents together. It celebrated those who worked with Subcouncil 8 to uplift, protect and support their local communities.

Recipients were recognised for their work in community development, disaster relief and social upliftment.

Ward 85 councillor and Subcouncil 8 chairperson Chantal Cerfontein highlighted the collaborative nature of these achievements.

“These awards highlight successful collaboration,” she said. “The individuals and organisations we recognised have shown dedication to their communities. Their partnership with Subcouncil 8 has helped implement projects that benefit residents.”

The recipients included Basil Branco, Sadiqa Youd (Sadiqa’s Kitchen), Xolelwa Sylvia Hlonyana (Peace of Mind foster home and community projects NGO), Lizo Makhasi (Anointed Christian Ministries), Katy Arendse (Maranatha Soup Kitchen), Lisa Starr (Helderberg Ocean Awareness Movement), Hazel Swanepoel (community humanitarian) and Charlene Bester (Rusthof Safe & Clean).

Others receiving awards were Jannie Frieslaar (Broadlands Park Community Forum), Monica Speelman (Unite the Needy NGO), Mynoena Latief (Unite The Needy NGO), Sumaya Gabier (SOUP NGO), Eveline Berggeren, Ashraf Khan (community humanitarian), Baron Farmer (Weltevreden Neighbourhood Watch) and Thembikosi Mgcule (community humanitarian).

Others included Edwina Hadfield (Gordon’s Bay Ratepayers’ Association), Dave Walker (Soet River Catchment Forum), Janap White (Strand Outreach Kitchens), Trudie Schoeman (Strong Schools Community Collaborative), Willem Bernhardt (community humanitarian), Lillia Fortune (community humanitarian), Zoleka Toni (Sisonke Sinako NGO), Vincent Sonwabo Tom (community humanitarian), Elmarie Bennet (Rusthof Safe & Clean), Beverley January (Rusthof Safe & Clean) and Gerdia Viljoen (Soet River Catchment Forum).

The recipients made significant contributions during the severe storms that affected parts of Cape Town last year.

They coordinated relief efforts and provided crucial support to vulnerable residents.

Their work included providing food, shelter and essential services during the crisis. Many helped rebuild damaged homes, run food distribution programmes and offer psychological social support.

Acting subcouncil manager Nonzuzo Jacob also thanked partners and stakeholders who contribute to community development initiatives.

Subcouncil 8 will continue to work with these community-based partners on upcoming projects that are focused on disaster preparedness and social development.
