A ruby toast to four decades of dignity

Helderberg Hospice marked its 40th anniversary with sophistication and warmth, hosting a delightful fundraising high tea at the Strand Town Hall on Sunday 25 May. The event, aptly titled “Ruby Affair” drew guests who were dressed to the nines, creating an atmosphere of celebration and community spirit. Attendees enjoyed the opportunity to reconnect with friends and strengthen family bonds while savouring teas and an array of delectable afternoon treats. The event not only commemorated four decades of compassionate care in the community but also raised vital funds to support hospice’s continued mission. Among the distinguished guests were several dedicated Helderberg Hospice staff members, including Cheryl Rundle, Joyce Ngcwama, Louise Smith, Karin Gordon, Thandi Sililo, Leigh Wentzel, Anna Oliver, and Celestine van der Merwe, whose presence highlighted the organisation’s commitment to its caring work. Candice Hering, Deirdrรฉ van der Heyde, Minerva Williams, Anthea da Silva, Claire Haupt, Judith Haupt, Cornelia Haupt, Sandy Dreyer and Jacoba de Vos embraced the celebratory spirit.
Nicholette Festus stepped out in style, donning not only a poised black ensemble but also a genuine smile that embodied the dignity and grace characteristic of Helderberg Hospice’s approach to its vital community work.

The Ruby Affair became a heartwarming gathering of family and cherished friends for Allen and Marina Sylvester, James and Felicia Visser, Noleen Petersen, Theresa Lange, Levirn and Devlin Sylvester, and Joy and Tony Sylvester.
Busking brothers Joshua and Liam van der Heyde took to the stage enthralling the audience with their their seamless harmonies.
Helderberg Hospice staffer Celestine van der Merwe celebrated the Ruby Affair milestone with her husband, Harold, whose sense of humour made him the ideal master of ceremonies for the occasion.

Guests enjoyed a spirited game of bingo, the lucky winners receiving amazing prizes, which served to enhance an already-festive mood.
The entertainment lineup featured an array of talented artists from throughout the Helderberg basin, creating a memorable atmosphere for the celebration. A particular highlight was the mesmerising performance by gifted vocalist Amir van Rooyen, who captivated the audience with his soulful interpretations of timeless classics including “Never Gonna Fall in Love” and “Lady.” The 15-year-old’s musical journey is as inspiring as his performances. Born with a cleft palateโ€”a condition for which he received corrective surgery through the Smile Foundationโ€”he has never allowed challenges to diminish his artistic passion. His remarkable talent emerged remarkably early, as he began humming melodies at just two years old, signaling the beginning of a profound connection with music that continues to flourish today.
Commanding attention with their majestic appearance, Pastor and Ruth Dominick arrived at the Ruby Affair adorned in attire befitting royalty.

Sr Thandi Sililo, Nursing Services Manager at Helderberg Hospice, delivered a compelling keynote address that resonated deeply with attendees. Speaking with both professional authority and personal warmth, she eloquently highlighted the comprehensive care services that Helderberg Hospice provides to the community. Her powerful presentation offered valuable insights into the hospice’s patient-centered approach, illustrating how their dedicated team offers physical, emotional, and spiritual support to both patients and families during life’s most challenging moments.
Adding an additional touch of elegance to the celebratory high tea, ballroom dancing duo Ethan Jansen and Amber van Wyk glided gracefully across the dance floor with mesmerising precision and much delight to the crowd. The talented pair, who hone their artistry as dedicated members of Somerset West’s prestigious Laverne Dance Studio, demonstrated remarkable chemistry and masterful footwork despite their relatively new partnership. Though they have been dancing together for only three months, their synchronised movements and evident passion for ballroom dancing belies their collaboration.
Helderberg Hospice’s dedicated staff member Cheryl Rundle and enthusiastic volunteer Tayla-Jade Posselt created an atmosphere of immediate warmth at the entrance to the Ruby Affair. The dynamic duo greeted each arrival with hospitality, extending welcomes that made guests feel both special and appreciated from the moment they stepped through the doors and found their seats.

Vocalist Mogamad Zayd Damon captivated the audience with “Last Dance” and “This Is My Life”, bringing impressive credentials including performances with Emo Adams and Alistair Izobel, and a full scholarship to SACS. He expressed gratitude for joining the celebration.
