 Somerset West police have opened an inquest docket after two senior citizens were found dead in their home last Thursday (22 May).

According to a police report, officers found the elderly couple, aged 87 and 89 respectively, at their residence in Helderspruit Road, Helderberg Estate. The circumstances surrounding the couple’s deaths are being investigated. Anyone with additional information which may aid the police investigation is urged to call Somerset West Police Station on 021 850 1303.

 Somerset West police compiled an accident report following a collision involving two minibus taxis on the corner of Andries Pretorius and Oak streets on Monday morning (26 May).

According to a police report, the accident occurred at 06:50.

“According to an eyewitness, the collision occurred as one of the vehicles was travelling in Andries Pretorius Street and the other was making its way from Oak Street. It is alleged that the latter experienced a mechanical fault,” stated the report.

“The driver of the taxi which was travelling in Andries Pretorius Street and four child occupants sustained slight injuries and were transported to hospital.”

 A middle-aged senior policeman was arrested following a collision in Main Road, Somerset West.

According to Sergeant Suzan Jantjies, spokesperson for Somerset West police, the incident occurred around 16:00 on Saturday 10 May.

“According to an eyewitness, a white Isuzu bakkie overtook his vehicle and collided with a motorbike,” said Jantjies. “The motorcyclist sustained injuries to his right leg and lower back.”

The driver of the bakkie, identified as a lieutenant-colonel who previously served the Helderberg community but is now stationed elsewhere, was arrested for reckless and negligent driving, as well as driving under the influence of alcohol.
