As the traditional diarrhoea season approaches, Masincedane Community Service has launched a proactive awareness programme in collaboration with local government’s community development worker, Innocentia Hlazo.

The initiative aims to educate young children and their teachers in 14 educare centers across Nomzamo and Asanda Village throughout March and April.

Recognising the severity of diarrhoea, which is the third leading cause of death in children aged one to 59 months, the collaborative effort focuses on preventative measures. The programme emphasises crucial practices such as good hygiene, access to clean drinking water, the importance of oral rehydration solution (ORS), improved sanitation, and thorough hand-washing with soap.

Community health workers are at the forefront of this vital campaign, delivering engaging educational talks to both children and teachers. These sessions will cover the causes and prevention of diarrhoea, reinforcing the significance of simple yet effective hygiene habits.

In addition to education, the programme will also provide essential health interventions. Children will receive vitamin A supplementation, known to boost their immune system, and deworming medication to combat parasitic infections that can contribute to illness.

The Masincedane Community Service highlighted the preventable nature of diarrhoeal disease.

“Diarrhoea doesn’t have to be a leading cause of death in our children,” a spokesperson for the organisation emphasised.

“Through consistent education on good hygiene practices and ensuring access to basic health interventions like ORS and clean water, we can significantly reduce its impact and save young lives.”
