A 28-year-old man from Trompsburg in the Free State is expected to appear in the Trompsburg Magistrate’s Court soon facing a charge of murder following the fatal stabbing of a 31-year-old man. According to the police the incident took place at nighttime at a local tavern on Friday, 4 July.
Sgt. Mahlomola Kareli, spokesperson for the Free State police, said the stabbing reportedly happened after a bitter dispute between the suspect and the victim over initiation schools. He said the police found the deceased at a tavern in Booysen Street in Trompsburg afterthey were alerted of the incident at approximately 23:55.
“Upon arrival, officers discovered the body of a 31-year-old male in a pool of blood with a stab wound. The victim was declared dead on the scene by the emergency personnel.
“A preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased and the suspect were allegedly involved in an argument at the tavern concerning initiation schools. It is also alleged that during the altercation, the suspect produced a knife and stabbed the victim, who died instantly,” said Kareli.
He said following the incident the suspect handed himself over to the police and was subsequently arrested. Kareli said an investigation is continuing into the murder incident.
